Mission
The Accountable Development Coalition is a grassroots organization made up of unions, affordable housing advocates, environmentalists, transit and land use experts, and other community-based groups. Our mission is to promote smart growth principles in order to create livable, environmentally sustainable communities with shared prosperity.
Vision
In 2006, the ADC established the following Seven Founding Principles for Accountable Development, to describe a sustainable and equitable development path that will serve the common good and create shared prosperity.
Development should:
#1: Create and enforce community standards through development that meets local and regional needs.
#2: Build mixed-income neighborhoods through the inclusion of affordable housing for all incomes in all residential developments.
#3: Promote good jobs through family-supporting wages and benefits, job security, the right to organize, job training, local hire, and opportunities for better jobs.
#4: Ensure community health and safety through good healthcare, safe working and housing conditions, and a healthy neighborhood environment.
#5: Be environmentally sustainable through good community design, particularly through pedestrian and transit oriented development, by using green building and environmentally conscious design through location-efficiency, use of green building materials and alternate fuel and energy sources including solar voltaic electrical systems.
#6: Build participation and encourage meaningful community involvement and representation in decisions about development.
#7: Be smart growth and transit-oriented by directing development towards existing communities, creating bikeable, walkable neighborhoods, and providing a multitude of transportation options.
